MANGOSTEEN | QUEEN OF FRUIT
First of all let me say "Welcome and thank you for visiting the Mangosteen Website!"
So, what is mangosteen? Mangosteen is a fruit that possess extraordinary healing qualities that is unique. Revered for its delicious taste, the mangosteen is also known as "Queen of Fruits".
Is mangosteen something new? Why is mangosteen now becoming known? The answer is mangosteen has been around for a while. Going back through history, mangosteen dates as far as the Ming Dynasty where records indicate that it was used for its medicinal properties. With the dawn of the internet creating easy access to information, it is accelerating our quest for alternate forms of holistic healing, hence mangosteen's increase in exposure.
In so many ways, the mangosteen can rightfully claim the bulk of the credit for having an ability to help strengthen the human body's immune system. The mangosteen contains the highest amount of natural xanthones known to man. Xanthones are the anti-oxidants that promote for a healthy well-being. Anti-oxidants help strengthen and protect our immune system by neutralizing free radicals that circulate in our body. These free radicals cause a constant deterioration to our general well-being by starting chain reactions that damage cells. While the effects caused by free radicals may not be immediately noticeable, cell mutation and accelerated aging might be a more appropriate term for what these free radicals do to us.
It is in the rind of the mangosteen fruit where organic compounds of bioflavonoids, phytonutrients, enzymes, and xanthones are found. They are the make-up of the mangosteen's healing properties. The rind itself is very bitter and therefore must be mixed with the juice of the sweet inner pulp to make it taste better. While folklore has it that when the mangosteen rind is used as tea, it treats bladder infections, diarrhea and others, laboratory studies indicate that the mangosteen can also kill human breast cancer cells through apoptosis. Very few indeed if any, can claim this capability where the mangosteen is able to fragment the DNA of tumors such as that of breast and of the DLD colon cancer. It seems endless the amount of applications where use of the mangosteen can be directed. The mangosteen is truly a magnificent fruit, one that embodies many good qualities.
Different parts of the mangosteen tree have also healing qualities. The stems, leaves, bark, and roots of the mangosteen are also utilized to fight off a host of illnesses and inconveniences ranging from pain of menstrual cramps, healing of wounds, to the worst type of afflictions that can diminish quality of life. Mangosteen can also be used to treat animals such as dogs and cats to make them feel better and extend their longevity. Mangosteen juice easily mixes with food of all sorts. Whether mangosteen is mixed with pet food for a cat that is a finicky eater, or to make that delicious cake dessert for a love one, meals made with mangosteen can be transformed into one with outstanding flavor and taste along with medicinal benefits. Use a pure mangosteen product such as Mangosteen Queen Juice to further enhance its flavor.
Maladies that rob us of our health and vitality not only cause frustration, sleep disorder, but cost us financially as well. It affects those around us whether directly or in-directly. I believe that depending on the individual, mangosteen can help to reduce or eliminate ailments in a person. People that have taken mangosteen juice as a nutritional supplement report unsolicited comments made by others that they look ten years younger, as well as the regular reporting of pains in their body subsiding, or having completely eliminated. A general feeling of more energy and stamina is reported by others. Having taken mega vitamins enhanced with DHEA for years for a diminishing libido has done very little for me except for some temporary improvement in my health. This would then quickly subside as soon as I missed a day's dose. Consequently, after it dawned on me that mangosteen juice has helped me like no other, I have completely stopped taking these expensive vitamin supplements. I simply just try to eat meals that by the end of the day amount to a balanced meal. Even my sister-in-law said that after trying mangosteen juice for the first time, the thick mucus in her throat that has plagued her every morning had lessened very much. This happened before she finished her first bottle. Experiences like these tend to make me believe that this is the reason why mangosteen is also referred as "Food of the God".

What are Phytonutrients, Xanthones, Enzymes, Antioxidants, and Bioflavonoids? What does it do for us? Where do they come from and how do they interact when ingested? These are some of the questions that will be addressed.
I. The term "phyto" originated from a Greek word meaning plant. Phytonutrients are certain organic components of plants, and these components are thought to promote human health. Fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and teas are rich sources of phytonutrients. Unlike the traditional nutrients (protein, fat, vitamins, minerals), phytonutrients are not "essential" for life, so some people prefer the term "phytochemical”. What people forget to realize though is our sun is an important source of life. Just like water, without the sun all life on earth would cease to exist. Protein, fat, vitamins and other minerals are derived from the sun one way or another. If we ate only protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals without any plant source, I do not believe that we will achieve a long and healthy life. The mangosteen fruit grows in climates where the sun is intense.
II. Xanthones are biologically active plant phenols found in a few select tropical plants. Current research on xanthones suggests they are beneficial in helping with many conditions including: allergies, infections (microbial, fungus, viral), cholesterol levels, inflammation, skin disorders, gastro-intestinal disorders, and fatigue.
Xanthones have been found to support and enhance the body's immune system. Xanthones also exhibit strong antioxidant activity which is beneficial for neutralizing free radicals in the body.
Facts about xanthones:
The most plentiful natural source of xanthones is the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), which contains over 40 xanthones. The mangosteen has by far the most xanthones of any plant. The pericarp of the mangosteen fruit contains the vast majority of the xanthones.
Xanthones are some of the most potent antioxidants known. It is thought to be more potent than both Vitamin C and Vitamin E. In fact, many doctors refer to xanthones as "Super Antioxidants."
Xanthones are heat stable molecules. Unlike proteins, they won't denature or lose their structure when heated.
III. Enzymes are biological catalysts responsible for supporting almost all of the chemical reactions that maintain animal homeostasis. Because of their role in maintaining life processes, the assay and pharmacological regulation of enzymes have become key elements in clinical diagnosis and therapeutics. The macromolecular components of almost all enzymes are composed of protein, except for a class of RNA modifying catalysts known as ribozymes. Ribozymes are molecules of ribonucleic acid that catalyze reactions on the phosphodiester bond of other RNAs.
Enzymes are found in all tissues and fluids of the body. Intracellular enzymes catalyze the reactions of metabolic pathways. Plasma membrane enzymes regulate catalysis within cells in response to extracellular signals, and enzymes of the circulatory system are responsible for regulating the clotting of blood. Almost every significant life process is dependent on enzyme activity.
IV. Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals might otherwise cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, A, and other substances. Considerable laboratory evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. Since Xanthones exhibit strong anti-oxidant activity, the correlation between the two of them is so great that the term Xanthone and Antioxidants become synonymous. All I know is that the mangosteen has helped me in more ways than one. I once had a pain in my thigh that would not go away for over a month. I had trouble getting back up whenever I squatted. After drinking mangosteen juice, in a few hours I felt something click in my leg that started to immediately make the pain go away. In three days' time all the pain was gone. Mangosteen juice works like a miracle. I have lessened my susceptibility to the Flu. I am now hardly affected by allergies during the fall season. Yes I sneeze every so often, but not like before where I was sneezing like crazy and that my stomach muscles hurt from non-stop sneezing. The upper inside part of my mouth used to be always itchy along with my eyes watering from the feeling of constantly being pricked. The same goes for my nose and ears, stuffed up. All of those symptoms disappeared after I tried mangosteen. By the way, I reside in Northeast America where pollen has affected me year after year for the last 40 years until I began to drink mangosteen juice. Although I am the CEO of Mangosteen Queen, I try not to be subjective with a mangosteen brand as I write. For all intent and purpose, any pure mangosteen juice that includes the rind will probably do as long as it is made wholesome. Mangosteen Queen however, is the mangosteen juice that I happen to have drunk the most, and the mangosteen product I am most familiar with.
V. Bioflavonoids are a group of naturally occurring plant compounds, which act primarily as plant pigments and antioxidants. They exhibit a host of biological activities, most notably for their powerful antioxidant properties. Bioflavonoids work with other antioxidants to offer a system of protection. Numerous studies have shown their unique role in protecting vitamin C from oxidation in the body, thereby allowing the body to reap more benefits from vitamin C.
Bioflavonoids are present in all botanical supplement products and foods. In fact, many medicinal herbs owe their curative actions to the bioflavonoids they contain. Besides the important antioxidant effects, bioflavonoids help the body maintain health and function in many ways. They have been shown to be anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-aging, and promote structure and function in the circulatory system.
The main health benefits of bioflavonoids fall into two categories: health-promoting effects and therapeutic effects. The health-promoting effects include better eyesight, improved cardiovascular health, increased capillary strength, improved structure of connective tissues and appearance of skin, and a stronger immune system. Bioflavonoids also offer the health-promoting effect of lowering the risk of some diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, arthritis, and gastrointestinal disorders. The therapeutic applications include treating a variety of diseases and disorders. Several of these are coronary heart disease, allergies, inflammation, hemorrhoids, respiratory diseases, viral infections, some types of cancer, and peptic ulcers.
Different bioflavonoids tend to have different health effects on the body.
The most recent scientific breakthroughs confirm that these powerful nutrients are an important part of a healthy diet. Studies from around the world support the fact that diets high in bioflavonoids are associated with lower incidences of most diseases. Along with other phytonutrients, the health benefits of bioflavonoids are one reason why the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Surgeon General’s office advocate the intake of several servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Nature offers powerful, health-promoting nutrients – the virtues of plants that never cease to amaze us, and the mangosteen being the "Queen of Fruit".
Mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana L., family Guttiferae, is a tree found in Southeast Asia, native to the Philippines, Indonesia (especially Java and Kalimantan), Malaysia and Thailand. It is also present in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mangosteen trees pass through a juvenile phase which can last anywhere from twelve to twenty years, although with good husbandry fruiting can be achieved at five to seven years after planting. An annual rainfall of 1270 mm along with an ideal temperature range of 25-35 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of over 80% is required to grow mangosteen. There are approximately 28 species of Garcinia in Malaysia, about 23 in Thailand, and possibly 20 in Indonesia and 19 in the Philippines. Other species of Garcinia although probably in lesser quantities, can be found in China, Africa by the Congo Basin, Australia, South America and in areas where the climate is conducive to the mangosteen's existence. Mangosteen can grow successfully on a wide range of soils. However, the mangosteen tree is not adapted to limestone soils, sandy alluvial soils or sandy soils low in humus. The quality of mangosteen fruit is affected by differences in climatic conditions. Grown for its delicious fruit, the mangosteen's aril (pulp) possesses a delicate and unique flavor.
The mangosteen's pericarps (peel from the fruit) have also been used as traditional medicine for treatment of skin infection and wounds for many years. The anti-fungal activity of several xanthones isolated from the fruit hulls of mangosteen and some derivatives of mangostin show good inhibitory activity against three types of phytopathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum vaseinfectum, Alternaria tenis, and Dreschlera oryzae). Some of the known cures derived from the mangosteen peel are for: diarrhea; chronic intestinal catarrh; dysentery and use as a lotion; treatment of respiratory disorders; healing skin infections; astringent; mangostin as anti-bacterial; mangostin as anti-inflammatory; mangostin derivative as a central nervous system depressant; and medicine for menstruation. The active principles in mangosteen are these mangostins and their derivatives, which are xanthones.
The mangosteen's seeds possess a nutty flavor. The seed is reported to contain 30% oil. Xanthones, isolated from the fruit hulls, and the edible arils and seeds of mangosteen, were tested for their anti-tuberculosis potential, and mangostins and garcinone B exhibited strong inhibitory effect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The barks of the mangosteen are astringent for the cure of aphtha or thrust, while its leaves for the leaf infusion in the cure of wounds.
Xanthones in Mangosteen are found to induce cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in human colon cancer DLD-1 cells too. Photochemical studies have shown that they contain a variety of secondary metabolites, such as oxygenated and prenylated xanthones. Recent studies have revealed that these xanthones exhibited a variety of biological activities containing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer effects. Some six xanthones from mangosteen exhibited potent cytotoxicity against leukemia HL60 cells and that it induced mitochondrial dysfunction.
Breast carcinoma (BC) is the commonest cancer among women and the second highest cause of death. Most cases occur during age 45-55. It also occurs in men but is more than 100-fold less frequent than in women. At present, the cancer treatment by chemotherapeutic agents, surgery and radiation have not been fully effective against the high incidence or low survival rate of most cancers. The development of new therapeutic approach to breast cancer remains one of the most challenging areas in cancer research. Many tropical plants have interesting biological activities with potential therapeutic applications. Mangosteen, known as queen of fruit or fruit of the God, is one of these tropical plants. People from where the mangosteen is grown have traditionally used mangosteen as treatment for abdominal pain, astringent, dysentery, suppuration, chronic ulcer, leucorrhea and ghonorrhea. Moreover, studies reveal that mangosteen has anti-tumor properties. Among the findings were anti-proliferation, anti-oxidation, and induction of apoptosis by mangosteen on SKBR3 human breast cancer cell line. The pericarp of mangosteen was reported to be the source of mangostin, tannin, xanthone, chrysanthenin, garcinone, gartanin, Vitamin B1, B2, C and other bioactive substances. It is very likely that traditional uses especially in the treatment of abdominal pain, leucorrhoea and chronic ulcer are related to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of mangosteen. Based on its traditional usages and later scientific findings, it is suggested that mangosteen is a potential candidate as an anti-cancer agent.
